Essex Conference Hosted by Chelmsford Against The Cuts 10th March
REPORT
Chelmsford Against The Cuts hosted a well attended and extremely interesting conference on 10 March for Essex campaigners against the cuts. Jo Clarke opened the plenary session by highlighting the way in which the government’s cuts have impacted most heavily on women. George Barratt, a former Labour Councillor at Barking, and now sitting as an independent, spoke of his experiences of campaigning against the BNP and how his opposition to the cuts had led to him being disciplined by the Labour Party. Tony Constable (Keep Our NHS Public) made a powerful speech against the Government’s Health Bill and highlighted that much of the Bill had been inherited from Labour’s strategy. He then explained just how serious a threat the Bill is to retaining the health service as a publicly-owned service, with privatisation a real threat.
After a break for Fairtrade beverages, the workshops commenced generating considerable debate. The subjects covered were the use of digital media for campaigning, the housing crisis and the defence of council housing, combatting racism, and the recent victory by electricians in the building industry. The discussions led to a range of proposals which will be put into action throughout Essex over the coming months.
